Teaching Philosophy

I teach music to spread joy! My approach is centered on creating a safe space of enthusiasm and care to promote growth. Teaching must be flexible, adaptable, and approached with the understanding that each person learns in their own way because we are all unique – so I must listen. As I challenge each student to improve and do their best, I want love and joy to always be at the heart of what I do.

0I have a private violin studio in Traverse City and have been teaching for more than 20 years. I teach students of all ages from 4 to 94! I am a founding teacher for the new non-profit, Benzie Youth String Program which serves students in Benzie County by providing free lessons and instruments. During the school year I frequently coach sectionals and chamber ensembles in the area public schools, TC Philharmonic Civic Orchestras, and the Dorothy Gerber String Program. In the summers, I teach violin at Interlochen Center for the Arts for the Adult String Orchestra Retreat.

My degree in music therapy, and growing up surrounded by children with all types of special needs, has helped inform my approach to teaching. As a middle and high school student, I was the assistant children's choir and chime choir director at my church and then a chamber music coach for the area youth orchestras. My first private student was at the age of 13 and I have been teaching ever since!

Rapport is key in any student-teacher relationship. Each student is a unique human being with the potential to learn, but every student learns differently. Therefore, the way I approach teaching a student must be molded by his/her responses. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach when learning an instrument. My teaching style is individualized to meet each person where they are, but in order for it to be effective, the student must also contribute by regular practice and attendance to lessons.

I incorporate elements of various methods that I have learned in the studio, in study, and in conversation with other professionals. The method used is not what is important; the student is what matters. A good set-up is vital to being able to grow as a violinist so my lessons always have a large emphasis on technique. Learning and teaching is a two-way street. Most of all it must be approached with joy!
